About Teresa Chen Jinjie
Teresa Chen Jinjie was a Chinese Catholic killed with her younger sister Rose during the Boxer violence of 1900. The Holy See’s canonization account names the sisters separately among the lay martyrs of Hebei, giving Teresa’s age as twenty-five and Rose’s as twenty-two.
Per Einar Odden’s church biography places their childhood in Feng, in Hebei, and says that both were baptized as children. It remembers Teresa as more reserved than her younger sister.
According to Odden’s account, on July 5, 1900, the sisters joined relatives and friends in a cart heading toward another village. Boxers intercepted the group and attacked several of the travelers. The account says that Teresa resisted being taken away and was fatally wounded. Rose was also wounded and died later while people were trying to bring her to safety.
The Martyrology locates their deaths near Huangeryin, Hebei.
Pius XII beatified Teresa and Rose on April 17, 1955. John Paul II canonized them on October 1, 2000, with the martyrs of China. Their individual commemoration is July 5 in the Nominis calendar.
In 2024, the Liturgical Research Center in Taiwan included Teresa, under her Chinese name 陳金婕, and Rose in its roster for the celebration of the Chinese martyrs. The list places them among the Christians killed in Hebei.
