About Theopista

Theopista is honored in Eastern Christian tradition as the wife of Eustathius and the mother of Agapius and Theopistus. The Antiochian Orthodox account names her Theopiste and gives her an individual commemoration with her family on 20 September. It describes the family receiving baptism together after her husband’s conversion.

Her personal story survives within the family’s Passion. In its Coptic version, separation and reunion occupy a central place. After captivity, Theopiste lives in a garden, where she hears two young soldiers recalling their childhood. Their account makes her suspect that they are her lost sons.

She approaches their commander to ask for passage home and recognizes her husband in him. She tells him what she has heard and urges him to question the young men. The reunion restores the family before the story’s final ordeal. The narrative ends with all four dying after refusing the emperor’s demands.

Tito Orlandi’s study explains that the Passion circulated in many languages and versions. Its Coptic form survives in one manuscript. Drawing on Hippolyte Delehaye’s analysis, he identifies the misfortunes as material from ancient romances and tales, with the martyrdom added as another narrative element. These literary traditions leave the family’s historical circumstances uncertain.

Theopiste’s maintained devotion is also expressed through worship. The Antiochian notice includes hymns addressed to her by name and remembers her endurance together with her husband and sons.
