Biography
Thomas of Mount Maleos

About Thomas of Mount Maleos
Thomas was a military commander before becoming a monk. The church account remembers his strength, courage, and victories, but presents his decision to leave military distinction as the turning point of his life. He first sought instruction from experienced elders and only later received a blessing for solitary life on Mount Maleos.
Traditions about his arrival there differ. One says the prophet Elijah led him by a pillar of fire; another describes Thomas himself appearing in fiery form when Elijah visited. These are visionary narratives associated with his imitation of the prophet. His solitude did not prevent others from seeking him out. Visitors came for spiritual counsel, and the tradition records healings through his prayers. He died in the tenth century. Some relics are preserved in the region of Monemvasia and Sparta, and his veneration is especially associated with Lakonia.
