Thuriau of Dol

About Thuriau of Dol

Thuriau is remembered as a monk and bishop-abbot of Dol in Brittany. The Diocese of Quimper’s account places his birth approximately in the seventh century and says that Tiernmaël resigned the leadership of the monastery in his favor. These details belong to the received tradition; they do not establish a precise chronology.

A study published in the diocesan bulletin in 1937 cautioned against treating his legends as a recoverable life story. It distinguished the uncertainty surrounding his dates from the antiquity of his cult. A twelfth-century missal of Rennes already commemorated him on 13 July. The study regarded his place among the respected leaders of the church of Dol as firmer than the elaborate narratives about him.

The forms Thurien, Turio and Urien also preserve his name. Accounts disagree over his birthplace and over the bishop whom he succeeded, so those details require caution. The French bishops’ calendar records churches dedicated to him at Landivisiau, Plogonnec and Saint-Thurien. These dedications show the reach of his remembrance without settling the disputed episodes of his life.

His cult also extended beyond Brittany. The historical study describes devotion in Paris and the diocese of Évreux, as well as invocations against fire and fever. Processions with his relics sought rain during drought. These are records of devotional practice, not evidence of medical or meteorological effects.

At Plumergat, the parish explicitly identifies Thuriau as its patron. His memory thus remains part of the community’s religious identity, even though the details of his personal history are difficult to recover.
