About Tryphon of Rostov

Tryphon of Rostov was a Russian monk and bishop of the fifteenth century. Before his episcopal appointment, he led the Moscow Savior monastery and served as confessor to Grand Prince Vasily II, known as Vasily the Dark. In 1462 he became bishop of Rostov. The surviving church biographies preserve this outline of his service but offer little detail about his teaching or daily work.

After several years, Tryphon left his episcopal office and lived at the Savior monastery in Yaroslavl. Nun Taisia’s account places his death there on December 30, 1468. It also records his burial at the monastery and the memory of him preserved in manuscript calendars. The Orthodox Church in America notes that some local records give a different death year.

His later remembrance became entangled with that of Prokhor, an earlier bishop of Rostov. The Orthodox Encyclopedia distinguishes the historical fifteenth-century Archbishop Tryphon from Prokhor, who died in 1328. A later account of the Tolga icon used the name Tryphon for a bishop associated with events in 1314. Subsequent writers tried to reconcile that story with Prokhor’s documented episcopate.

One explanation proposed that Prokhor had taken the monastic name Tryphon. The encyclopedia observes that medieval sources do not call him by that name. During the nineteenth century, the two cults became associated with the same burial chapel in Yaroslavl. This later identification should not turn Tryphon’s fifteenth-century life into an account of the earlier bishop’s deeds.

Both bishops were included in the Synaxis of Rostov and Yaroslavl Saints in 1964. Tryphon also has an individual commemoration on February 1. Taisia explains that this is the feast of his namesake, the martyr Tryphon; the two saints are separate people. Her account lists May 23 for the regional synaxis.
