About Wilfrid
Wilfrid's life is known chiefly through Bede's Ecclesiastical History and the Life of Bishop Wilfrid associated with Eddius Stephanus. Both are early medieval sources, but they had different purposes and loyalties: Bede frames events within his history of the English Church, while Eddius writes a saint's life connected to Wilfrid's followers. Their accounts can establish the outlines of Wilfrid's public career more securely than precise details about his childhood or private motives. This biography therefore emphasizes events each source locates in the institutional history of the church.Bede places Wilfrid in the dispute over how the Northumbrian church should calculate Easter and order related customs. At the Synod of Whitby in 664, Wilfrid argued for the Roman practice, drawing on its use at Rome and across much of the western church. Bede presents the decision as a debate before King Oswiu, who ultimately accepted the Roman calculation. Wilfrid's role made him a notable representative of a wider ecclesiastical alignment; it should not be reduced to a simple contest between national groups or treated as a complete account of every position at the synod.Wilfrid was consecrated bishop in Gaul and returned to Northumbria, where his authority later came into conflict with royal and episcopal decisions. Bede describes his removal from office, journey to Rome, and eventual return to Britain. When unable to resume his northern see, Wilfrid preached in the still largely pagan South Saxon territory. Bede credits him and his companions with baptizing people there and recounts their work during famine. These details come through Bede's Christian interpretation of events, while the basic sequence shows how Wilfrid combined episcopal advocacy, travel, and missionary work.Bede says Wilfrid was restored to a see and later again deprived of office; his account also situates him among bishops at a Roman synod. The historian records that Wilfrid died in 709, after a long episcopal career. The Roman Catholic tradition commemorates him on October 12.
