About Yangzhi Lang
Lang Yangzhi was a mother and a Christian catechumen in Hebei, China, during the 1900 persecution associated with the Yihetuan, or Boxer, movement. The Vatican's canonization material lists her as about twenty-nine years old. That age suggests a birth around 1871, but no exact birth date or birthplace is established by the consulted sources.
The Roman Martyrology account reproduced by the French bishops' Nominis service places her at Lujiapo near Qinghe with her son Paul Lang Fu. It says she declared herself Christian and that both were confined in their house when it was set on fire. The martyrology remembers their deaths as martyrdom; it supplies no independently documented account of her earlier life.
The martyrology places their deaths on July 16, 1900. John Paul II canonized her with Augustine Zhao Rong and the other martyrs of China on October 1, 2000. Her remembrance preserves a mother's witness alongside her son's without assuming details about her baptism, occupation, or family beyond those the sources provide.
