About Zhang Huailu
Zhang Huailu was born in Zhukotian, Hebei, in 1843. His family opposed Christianity, but he began receiving Catholic instruction in 1900. Difficulty learning prayers did not end his interest in the faith, although he had not yet received baptism.
During the attacks that year, others tried to protect him by pointing out that he was not formally a Christian. The church account remembers him openly acknowledging his belief despite that opportunity to escape. He was killed and later recognized among the Chinese martyrs, being canonized in 2000.
