Andrew Wouters

About Andrew Wouters
Andrew Wouters was a parish priest at Heinort near Dordrecht. Estius’s account says that the Sea Beggars detained him at home and brought him to Brielle, where he joined the other prisoners. It also reports that his earlier conduct as a priest was considered unedifying. Estius presents his martyrdom as an expression of divine mercy.
The shrine at Brielle names Wouters among the nineteen Gorcum martyrs and identifies him as a diocesan priest. Its chronology records their death on 9 July 1572 and canonization on 29 June 1867. The Diocese of Rotterdam celebrates their feast on 9 July.
Their remembrance continues through pilgrimage and worship. At the closing celebration of the 2026 pilgrimage season, Bishop Van den Hende connected the martyrs’ witness with a living relationship with Christ, rather than religious knowledge alone. His homily emphasized love expressed through words and deeds. This is a reflection on the group’s shared legacy, not evidence about Wouters’s daily ministry.
