About Baudolino

Baudolino is remembered as an eighth-century hermit near the Tanaro in northern Italy. The church biography identifies Paul the Deacon’s History of the Lombards as an early witness to him.

Paul’s story connects him with a fatal hunting accident involving King Liutprand’s grandson and attributes extraordinary foreknowledge to the hermit. That episode is reported as a religious narrative, not as independently verified clairvoyance.

Later veneration developed in Alessandria, with the care of his relics passing through several churches. Although later images sometimes depict him as a bishop or connect him with the Humiliati, the biography explains that the latter movement arose centuries after his death.
