Benignus of Todi

About Benignus of Todi
Benignus of Todi is remembered as a priest and martyr of the city in central Italy. According to local tradition, his Christian service led to ordination, followed by persecution and death around 303 under Diocletian.
The same account says that Christians recovered his body and buried it beside the road toward Vicus Martis. A place of prayer and later a Benedictine monastery stood at the burial site.
The church biography records a later relocation of his relics to the high altar of San Silvestro in 1904. The narrative of his death remains a received tradition; the later history of his shrine explains how his memory endured in Todi.
