Bernard of Menthon

About Bernard of Menthon

Bernard served as archdeacon at Aosta and is remembered for sheltering travelers crossing the Alps. The hospice's history places its foundation around 1050, when cold, exhaustion, and robbery endangered people using the pass.

Later narratives obscure Bernard's chronology. Archivist Jean-Pierre Voutaz questions the Menthon lineage and the late story's dates, 923–1008. The archives instead give a birth around 1020 and competing death years, 1081 or 1086, with burial at Novara.

The Historical Dictionary of Switzerland identifies an institution dedicated to Nicholas of Myra at the pass in records from 1125. Bernard appears as an additional patron from 1149. Its account treats the foundation around 1050 as a historical reconstruction and leaves the earliest community's organization uncertain. The later congregation of regular canons adopted Augustine's rule; the dictionary gives 1225 as its first recorded mention. These distinctions matter because Bernard's work preceded the fully documented institutions that carried on his name and hospitality.

Pope Francis recalled Bernard's unsuccessful appeal at Pavia to persuade Henry IV against war with Gregory VII. The address places his death at Novara in 1081.

The hospice's famous dogs belong to a later history, not to Bernard's lifetime. The Historical Dictionary dates their presence from the late seventeenth century. His memory endures in the community's material and spiritual assistance to travelers.
