About Blas Rodríguez de Cuacos
Blas Rodríguez de Cuacos came from Cuacos in the region now called Cáceres, Spain. His birth is placed between 1550 and 1560, without a known exact year. He became a priest of the Franciscan Province of San Gabriel and went to Florida in 1590.
The cause report identifies 1590 as the first certain date of his activity. His earliest assignments in Florida are unknown.
By 1597 he served Tupiqui, a Guale settlement associated with the Espogache chiefdom. The diocesan account remembers him celebrating Mass before his death during the September uprising. It says he was then bound and killed. These are received accounts of his final hours, not a surviving transcript.
Colonial testimony later accused Blas of threatening complainants with whipping. That remains an allegation. The same documentary study records the coercive interrogation of Lucas, whose testimony implicated him in the killing. Such evidence requires caution rather than automatic acceptance as a complete account of either man’s conduct.
Tupiqui’s original archaeological location has not been securely identified. The diocesan mission history records burned buildings after the uprising and a later relocation to Sapelo Island; neither establishes a known individual grave.
Francis and Kole’s historical study warns that the exact responsibility for the killings and their full motivation cannot be determined with certainty.
Pope Francis recognized the group’s martyrdom in 2025. As of October 23, 2026, beatification remains scheduled for October 31 in Savannah.
