About Buriana
Buriana is the saint whose name is preserved by Saint Buryan in Cornwall. The received account describes her as an Irish woman who came to Cornwall in the sixth century, while acknowledging that almost nothing is known about her life.
Stories of a king’s attempted kidnapping, miraculous snow and her sudden death belong to legend. The church biography cites a tenth-century charter as the first written reference to her and connects her relics with the church at Saint Buryan.
It also records several feast dates and warns against confusion with the Irish saint Bruinech. Her local dedication provides firmer ground for remembrance than the elaborate royal story.
