Daniel of Padua

Portrait of Daniel of Padua

About Daniel of Padua

Daniel is remembered at Padua as a deacon and martyr. Later tradition makes him a convert and helper of Prosdocimus.

The dates attached to this story conflict. One version places his death in 168, while another interpretation places the martyrdom during the early-fourth-century persecutions.

In 1076, remains identified as Daniel’s were carried into Padua’s cathedral. That medieval recognition belongs to the history of his cult, rather than to direct evidence for the events of his life.

Later art portrays him as a deacon. His memory became part of Padua’s local religious identity alongside its other patrons.
