Deodatus of Nevers

Portrait of Deodatus of Nevers

About Deodatus of Nevers

Deodatus is remembered as a bishop and hermit associated with the Vosges. Tradition identifies him with the bishop of Nevers, but his origins are disputed.

The surviving life was written in the eleventh century and has little value as a detailed historical record. It presents his movements and foundations through a much later monastic narrative.

Even his role in founding the community at Jointures has been questioned. The stories should not be treated as a continuous documented itinerary.

His June 19 commemoration in the Roman Martyrology preserves the traditional connection between the bishop and the monastery later bearing his name.
