About Faranan of Allernan

Faranan, also known as Farannán or Forannán, is remembered as an Irish holy man associated with Alternan in County Sligo. Tradition places him among the disciples of Columba. The Norwegian Catholic Church’s account acknowledges that it is not known whether his monastic training took place in Ireland or on Iona. His connection with Columba belongs to the received account, rather than a securely documented itinerary.

Nominis describes him as a hermit who returned to Ireland and ended his life at Allernan. Its notice gives 590 as his death year, while the Norwegian account makes that date approximate. The latter spelling, Alternan, is used for the place in the longer account. Neither notice supplies a secure date of birth.

The written story requires care. Courtney Selvage’s study identifies the surviving Life as a text copied by Míchéal Ó Cléirigh in 1629. She argues that its links with Columba draw on local tradition and reused Columban material. She suggests that the account may have served the interests of the family claiming rights over Faranan’s church. These are conclusions about the formation of his Life, not independent confirmation of every encounter it describes.

A more tangible record of his remembrance survives in the landscape and local testimony. The National Folklore Collection preserves an account collected at Cillín Dubh school from Mrs J. Kilcullen. It calls Faranan the local patron saint and describes a well, a stone remembered as his bed, and a pilgrimage on the last Sunday of July. The reported marks of his knees belong to local devotional tradition. The account records how people remembered him; it does not establish those marks as physical evidence of his life.

His local feast is listed on February 15 by Nominis. Beyond this calendar remembrance, his story remains attached to Alternan: a holy place whose saint was remembered through solitude and pilgrimage, even though the details of his early life are uncertain.
