Biography
Felix of Nola

About Felix of Nola
Felix of Nola is remembered as a priest, not as a bishop. The distinction matters because another Felix of Nola is described as a bishop and martyr in later accounts.
Bede's retelling describes Felix carrying the exhausted Bishop Maximus home. The story includes an angelic intervention.
Felix reportedly refused the bishopric and chose poverty. The Vatican account describes his refusal to reclaim confiscated property and his continuing service to others.
The chronology is disputed. Nominis reproduces a martyrology estimate around 260, while the Vatican's account places his death shortly after 313. These alternatives should not be combined into a single precise timeline.
Paulinus celebrated Felix in annual poems between 395 and 408. The Oxford study of those poems describes devotion at his tomb and Paulinus's expansion of the shrine.
The Vatican account locates his burial at Cimitile, near Nola, and notes the growth of pilgrimage. It explains his martyr title through suffering endured without a violent death. His tomb became a place of continuing devotion.
