About Francisco Blanco

Francisco Blanco was a Spanish Franciscan priest from O Tameirón in Galicia, now within the Diocese of Ourense. A diocesan saints list gives a precise birth date in 1570, while a Franciscan biography places his birth around 1567 near Monterrei. Because those accounts disagree, this profile records his home but leaves the birth date unset. Blanco studied with Jesuits and later entered the Franciscans; the Franciscan account describes his formation in Galicia and Castile.

Franciscan sources say Blanco traveled through Mexico and the Philippines before reaching Japan with Martin of the Ascension in 1596. He was a priest, unlike Francis of Saint Michael, who was a lay brother among the same six foreign Franciscans. The Tokyo Franciscan history names Blanco among the friars arrested after opposition to their activities intensified.

The prisoners included six Franciscan missionaries, three Jesuits and Japanese lay Christians. They were taken to Nagasaki, where Blanco and the others were executed on 5 February 1597. The group was beatified in 1627 and canonized in 1862. His Spanish name and priestly role distinguish him from the Japanese Francis of Nagasaki and carpenter Francis Kichi. Accounts of individual suffering vary, so this draft relies on the shared chronology rather than inventing words spoken by Blanco.

Ourense has a particular memory of its missionary martyr. A diocesan decree records that his local memorial, formerly on 3 February, was transferred by a 2015 Roman rescript to 6 February with Paul Miki and companions. This local date is one day after the execution. The different birth dates and local feast history are part of the record, not reasons to collapse him into another Francis among the martyrs.
