Francisco de Veráscola

About Francisco de Veráscola
Francisco de Veráscola was born in Gordejuela on February 13, 1564, and entered the Franciscan Province of Cantabria. He sailed for Florida in 1595 with the group that included Miguel de Añon. At Asao he helped establish a mission and served the neighboring community of Talaje.
The cause report names his parents as Domingo de Veráscola and María Sáez de Castañiza and records his baptism on his birthday at San Juan de Molinar. It treats his ordination around 1590 as an estimate.
His imposing build and strength became memorable features of the received account. The diocesan profile describes him joining Guale young people in athletic games.
Historian John Worth’s chronology places him on an inland expedition in 1597 with Pedro de Chozas, Gaspar de Salas, and Guale companions. Their journey from Tolomato toward Tama and Ocute preceded the violence on the coast.
Francisco was away obtaining supplies in St. Augustine when the other friars were attacked. The church account says he was killed on returning to Asao in September 1597.
The cause report acknowledges that no Christian eyewitness supplied a direct account of his death. Its reconstruction depends on scattered testimony and conjecture.
Francis and Kole caution that the exact perpetrators and full motives of the killings cannot be established with certainty. Francisco’s physical strength does not establish his final thoughts or actions.
Pope Francis recognized the group’s martyrdom in 2025. As of October 23, 2026, their beatification remains scheduled for October 31 in Savannah.
