About François-Isidore Gagelin

François-Isidore Gagelin was born at Montperreux in France on 10 May 1799. He joined the Paris Foreign Missions Society and reached Vietnam in 1821. There he was ordained a priest and visited Christian communities in the south. The society’s account also records time spent at the imperial court in Huế translating documents. This profile keeps his missionary work distinct from that of other priests in the same mission.

An imperial order against Christian practice was issued in 1833. Gagelin surrendered and was brought to Huế in August; he was held while his case proceeded. The Paris Foreign Missions account preserves letters from this imprisonment, but this draft does not quote them or treat later dramatic retellings as independent evidence. The archival record identifies Bãi Dâu on the Huế river as the place of his execution on 17 October 1833.

The Holy See lists him among the priests martyred in Vietnam and canonized in 1988. The French bishops give 17 October as a local feast for Gagelin, while the Vietnamese martyrs are celebrated together on 24 November. Those dates refer to different kinds of observance. His birthplace, priesthood and death are well attested, while more detailed accounts of his final emotions should be read as testimony preserved by his missionary society.
