George Preca
About George Preca
George Preca was born in Valletta, Malta, in 1880. He studied for the priesthood and was ordained in 1906. He wanted lay Catholics to be well formed in their faith and able to teach others. In 1907 he gathered a small group of young people for formation; this became the Society of Christian Doctrine.
Preca taught and wrote in Maltese so his work could reach people in their everyday language. The society developed catechetical centers for children and adults, with lay members continuing their own formation. Church scrutiny and a temporary closure interrupted the early work, but the society continued and later gained formal ecclesial recognition. This history shows both his persistence and the ordinary institutional difficulties of a new movement.
Preca died at Santa Venera on 26 July 1962. He was beatified in Malta in 2001 and canonized in 2007. His legacy is closely tied to lay catechesis and accessible teaching. The Holy See English biography and Latin decree give his birth as 12 February 1880; one French biography sentence differs, so the discrepancy is retained in this review note.
