About Godfried van Duynen

Godfried van Duynen was a diocesan priest, born around 1502 according to a Catholic biographical account. He had served for years as a parish priest in northern France before living in retirement at Gorkum. Unlike Godfried Coart, another of the nineteen martyrs, he was not a Franciscan friar. Distinguishing the two men preserves their different lives within a shared commemoration.

When armed Sea Beggars took Gorkum in 1572, van Duynen was among the clergy detained there. He was eventually brought with the other prisoners to Brielle. The Holy See identifies him among the diocesan priests killed on 9 July 1572. The group’s fate belongs to the political and religious violence of the Dutch Revolt; his priestly work before imprisonment remains part of the story.

The Church canonized the nineteen together in 1867 and commemorates them on 9 July. His individual record is thinner than the collective history, so this account leaves aside dramatic dialogue and disputed anecdotes from later retellings. He is remembered here as an older parish priest whose death became part of a common witness.
