About Jesús Méndez Montoya
Jesús Méndez Montoya was born in Tarímbaro, Michoacán, on 10 June 1880. Ordained in 1906, he served at Valtierrilla. His work included teaching catechism, visiting poor families, advising workers and farmers, and training a choir.
Federal troops entered Valtierrilla on 5 February 1928 and found Méndez in the house where he was hiding. The Holy See's account records his concern for the consecrated hosts he carried before the soldiers took him outside and shot him. He was canonized in 2000 with the Mexican martyrs.
