John Alcober

About John Alcober
John Alcober was a Spanish Dominican who initially remained in Spain when a planned missionary journey was delayed. After ordination and work as a preacher, he travelled to Manila, where he ministered among Chinese residents and studied the language.
He entered the Fujian mission in 1728. The church account describes ministry conducted in disguise and in hiding, often in company with Francis Serrano. Alcober was imprisoned with fellow Dominicans at Fuzhou and died there in 1748. His birthplace is disputed in the consulted source, which offers Gerona and Granada; no single settlement is selected.
