Leo of Montefeltro

About Leo of Montefeltro

Leo of Montefeltro is remembered with Marinus in the Christian origins of the region. The diocesan account presents them as stoneworkers from the island of Arbe in Dalmatia who came to Rimini and combined their work with Christian witness.

In the received story, Leo withdrew to the rocky height later called San Leo and gathered a Christian community there. The diocese identifies the claim that he was its first bishop as tradition, while acknowledging that the formal diocese arose centuries later.

A separate diocesan account remembers Leo as a priest ordained by the bishop of Rimini. It also records competing traditions about his relics, including their removal toward Germany and their possible continued presence at San Leo. These traditions do not establish an exact personal chronology.
