Portrait of Lubentius

About Lubentius

Lubentius is remembered as a priest associated with Kobern on the Mosel. The received account links his ministry with Maximin of Trier and places his death around 350.

His life reached later readers through a biography of Maximin written in the eighth century and through a twelfth-century legend. The long interval matters when assessing the account's miraculous episodes.

The diocesan handbook of Limburg also distinguishes a foundation legend from the documented history at Dietkirchen. It identifies a church notice from 841, while treating the claim that Lubentius himself founded the earlier church as legend.

His memory is particularly associated with the Lahn. The Norwegian church calendar lists October 13 as his commemoration and records a traditional patronage of boatmen on that river.
