About Macarius the Faster of the Kiev Near Caves

Macarius was a deacon associated with the Near Caves of the monastery at Kiev. The Orthodox Church in America places him in the twelfth century. Its notice preserves little of his personal history, beyond his ministry and the ascetic title by which he is remembered.

His January 19 commemoration connects him with his namesake, Macarius of Egypt. He is also included in the September 28 gathering of saints of the Near Caves. These calendar notices establish the form of his veneration without supplying an exact birth or death date. He is distinct from Macarius the Deacon of the Far Caves, whose commemoration preserves another monk of the same name.
