Pambo the Recluse of the Kiev Caves

Portrait of Pambo the Recluse of the Kiev Caves

About Pambo the Recluse of the Kiev Caves

Pambo was a priest-monk of the Kiev Caves. According to the Orthodox Church in America's received life, he was captured by Tatars while carrying out a monastic duty and endured years of captivity because he would not renounce Christianity. The account attributes his return to his cell to miraculous deliverance. It records his death in seclusion in 1241 and locates his relics in the Caves of Theodosius. The miraculous return is preserved as tradition, rather than a verified account of travel.
