About Pedro de Corpa

Pedro de Corpa was a Spanish Franciscan priest who went to Florida in 1587 with Antonio de Badajoz. After serving near St. Augustine, he took responsibility for Tolomato, an important Guale community on the coast of present-day Georgia. His ministry included teaching and baptism.

The cause report estimates his birth around 1560 because no birth, profession, or ordination record has been found. It remembers his command of the Guale language.

The received church account connects his death with a dispute over Juanillo’s second marriage. Juanillo was a baptized Christian and a prospective chief, so questions of Christian marriage and political succession intersected.

Pedro was the first of the five friars killed in September 1597. The diocesan and Franciscan accounts differ over the precise date and weapon; those details are therefore not asserted here.

Historians Francis and Kole caution that neither the exact perpetrators nor the full motives of the killings can be established with certainty. Their analysis complicates a single explanation of the uprising.

A museum skull was once attributed to Pedro, but the researchers who examined it no longer believed it belonged to a martyr and could not conclusively resolve its identity. It is not an established relic.

Pope Francis recognized the group’s martyrdom in 2025. As of October 23, 2026, their beatification remains scheduled for October 31 in Savannah.
