Reginaldo Hernández Ramírez

About Reginaldo Hernández Ramírez
Reginaldo Hernández Ramírez was a Mexican Dominican priest whose life ended in Spain. Born in San Miguel el Alto, he was the son of Aniceto Hernández and Vicenta Ramírez. His original name was Luciano; he adopted Reginaldo in religious life. The municipal historical notice recalls that his mother died when he was ten and that his interests included poetry, painting, music and sculpture.
His studies in Guadalajara were interrupted when the seminary was confiscated during religious persecution. With help from Dominican priest Mariano Navarro, he traveled to Spain. He professed at Corias in 1927, studied philosophy and theology, and was ordained in 1933. Assigned to Santo Domingo el Real in Madrid, he studied law and prepared writing on family life, war and peace.
The municipal account dates his first Mass to June 18, 1933.
A library-accession list published by Spain’s Instituto Nacional de Previsión in April 1936 records La familia under his name, identifying it as a Madrid publication of 1935.
According to the Dominican account, he took refuge with a family after his community dispersed in 1936. He was arrested and executed in Madrid on August 13.
The Catholic Church beatified him on October 28, 2007.
His writing continued to circulate after his death. In May 1942, the bulletin of the Asociación Católica Nacional de Propagandistas advertised La familia under his name as the third volume in a collection of handbooks on religion, ethics and sociology.
In 1954, the jurist Federico de Castro y Bravo cited La familia in a study of parents’ authority over their children’s marriages.
