Sisenandus of Beja

About Sisenandus of Beja
Sisenandus was a deacon from Beja who studied in Córdoba and died there on July 16, 851. He is remembered locally as a martyr. The diocesan account identifies Eulogius’s Memoriale sanctorum as the source for his life.
Eulogius places his education at the basilica of Saint Acisclus. He says Sisenandus reported being invited to martyrdom by Peter and Walabonsus, who had already died. The narrative then describes him in prison, writing a reply to a friend. Before finishing, he sends away the messenger, saying that guards are about to take him to his execution. Eulogius presents this as prophetic knowledge. His account is devotional testimony, not independent verification of the vision or prediction.
The account continues with guards taking him before the judge, where he maintains his confession and is killed. It says women later found his remains among stones in the riverbed and brought them to Saint Acisclus.
His remembrance in Beja developed centuries later. Writing in the diocesan newspaper, Rui Carriço connects renewed devotion with the sixteenth-century publication of Eulogius’s work. He reports that a relic came from Córdoba and is kept at the cathedral’s altar dedicated to Sisenandus. Beja adopted him as its patron on October 24, 1651. A chapel once stood near the church of Salvador; an inscription marks its former location.
Carriço also records that Bishop Manuel Falcão chose Sisenandus as patron of the permanent deacons of the diocese. This is a specific local patronage. The city’s commemoration falls on October 24, a different date from his death in July.
The diocesan calendar for October 2026 continues to list his solemnity on October 24, together with the diocesan day of deacons.
