About Theodoric Balat
Theodoric Balat was a French Franciscan priest whose first religious formation took place while he was still at school. At the seminary in Albi, a visit from a Franciscan missionary prompted him to enter the order. His novitiate began at Pau, followed by profession and further studies in England.
He was ordained there before undertaking missionary service in China. His life ended in 1900 during the violence against the Catholic mission. He was killed at Taiyuan on 9 July. He was canonized in 2000 with the Chinese martyrs.
