Valentine of Rome

Portrait of Valentine of Rome

About Valentine of Rome

Valentine of Rome is remembered as a priest who died for his Christian faith. His name belongs to an early martyr tradition, but the surviving stories do not provide a secure, detailed life. Herbert Thurston's Catholic Encyclopedia account distinguishes the Roman priest from a bishop of Terni and another martyr associated with Africa. It describes the surviving accounts of the Roman and Terni Valentines as late and historically unreliable.

In the Roman story retold by Vatican News, Valentine refuses an emperor's invitation to worship the gods. He later prays for the blind daughter of Asterius, whose household becomes Christian after her healing. The story ends with Valentine's execution. These are episodes of hagiographic tradition, including a miracle account, rather than independently verified events.

The memory of a martyr named Valentine took a lasting place in Rome's sacred landscape. The Pontifical Commission for Sacred Archaeology describes changes around his burial at the catacomb bearing his name during the fourth century. An eighth-century devotional room there was decorated with Christian paintings. The site records generations of remembrance, even though it cannot supply the missing details of his childhood or ministry.

The later custom of sending a Valentine belongs to a different chapter of history. The British Library identifies a letter written by Margery Brews to her fiancé John Paston in February 1477 as the oldest surviving Valentine's Day letter in English. It is a medieval woman's letter, not a message written by the saint.

At Whitefriar Street Church in Dublin, couples visit Valentine's shrine to pray for their life together. The church's published prayer asks for steadfast faith, hope, and faithfulness in marriage. This continuing devotion connects his remembrance with care for relationships, without establishing the romantic stories as facts about his life.
