About Galgano Guidotti

Galgano Guidotti was born at Chiusdino, near Siena, in the middle of the twelfth century. The early sources do not give an exact birth year, although later writers proposed 1148. His mother Dionisia testified in a papal inquiry held after his death, providing unusually early evidence for a medieval hermit’s life.

According to that testimony, dreams and religious visions helped turn Galgano toward a solitary life. He settled at Montesiepi around 1180. The well-known account of his sword planted in the ground as a cross belongs to the tradition of his conversion; the Italian diocesan church inventory still identifies the sword kept at the hermitage as an object of that tradition. Treccani cautions that later stories about a supposedly violent youth reflect familiar patterns of medieval hagiography rather than secure biography.

Galgano died at Montesiepi, probably on 30 November 1181, after less than a year as a hermit. His followers sought recognition of his cult, and Treccani places his canonization probably in 1185 under Lucius III. The Roman Martyrology remembers him on 30 November as a hermit whose life changed toward penitence. His short period at Montesiepi became the focus of a lasting local devotion.
