About Gonsalo Garcia

Gonsalo Garcia was born at Bassein on the western coast of India to a Portuguese father and an Indian mother. Sources disagree about his birth year, so no exact year is entered here. He learned Japanese and worked for years as a catechist in Japan before entering trade. Later in Manila he joined the Franciscans as a lay brother, returning to Japan with their mission.

The Archdiocese of Bombay describes his work as an interpreter and organizer for Franciscan buildings and hospitals. When Japanese authorities confined the missionaries amid suspicion of their activities, Garcia and twenty-five companions were arrested. They were killed at Nagasaki on 5 February 1597. The group included Franciscan friars, Japanese lay Christians and three Jesuits; Garcia’s story belongs within that wider community rather than a mission conducted alone.

Pius IX canonized the group in 1862. The Franciscan remembrance of the first Nagasaki martyrs is on 6 February. The Archdiocese of Bombay records a separate 7 February local feast for Garcia, allowing his remembrance there to be distinguished from the common memorial. His two observances reflect the reach of a life lived between India, the Philippines and Japan.
