John the Solitary of Jerusalem

Portrait of John the Solitary of Jerusalem

About John the Solitary of Jerusalem

John lived as a solitary near Jerusalem. The Orthodox Church in America places him in the sixth century and describes his home as a cave, where he prayed and fasted. The calendar’s account says that he possessed an icon of Mary with a lamp burning before it, and that he visited Jerusalem’s holy places, Sinai, and the graves of martyrs and ascetics.

The story gives his poverty a central place. It also tells of a lamp that remained alight during his absences and of a lion that made room for him on a narrow path. These are received hagiographic stories, rather than independently verified episodes. The notice says that John died at an advanced age but does not establish an exact year or a detailed personal chronology.
