About Julián Alfredo

Julián Alfredo, born Vilfrido Fernández Zapico in Cifuentes de Rueda on December 24, 1903, became a Brother of the Christian Schools. He joined their Bujedo novitiate in 1926, taught at Caborana and moved to Turón in 1933.

His classroom belonged to a network of schools serving Asturias’s mining communities. Historian Enrique Gudín de la Lama describes free education supported by agreements with mining companies. He also notes a source of tension: the brothers’ connections with company directors and their traditional outlook led some workers to associate them with employers.

The brothers reorganized their schools after the 1933 legislation on religious congregations. They continued teaching through arrangements with lay ownership and changed personnel. Gudín’s study identifies Julián as the teacher of Turón’s fifth class in the following school year. It records his community’s arrest on October 5, 1934, during the revolutionary uprising, followed by imprisonment in the Casa del Pueblo and execution in the cemetery.

Julián died on October 9.

John Paul II canonized the martyrs on November 21, 1999. In his homily, the pope remembered them as educators who had sustained their religious commitment through prayer and fraternity. He explicitly distinguished their witness from participation in warfare. Julián’s religious profession was that of a teaching brother; the priest killed with the community was the Passionist Inocencio de la Inmaculada.

The Diocese of León’s proper calendar gives Julián an October 9 memorial. Its liturgical texts recall both his work with children and young people and his fidelity under persecution. This remembrance places his ordinary vocation as an educator alongside the circumstances of his death.

A parish in León bears his name and celebrates its patronal feast in his honor. A parish learning booklet invites children to identify his image, learn about his life and explore their church. The activities offer a local example of how his memory continues through the kind of religious education to which he devoted his life.
