Palladius the Desert Dweller

Portrait of Palladius the Desert Dweller

About Palladius the Desert Dweller

Palladius lived as a hermit in a mountain cave near Antioch. The Romanian Patriarchate’s calendar notice, translated from the Orthodox Church in America, places his death near the end of the fourth century. It also credits him with writings of spiritual instruction, without identifying them in detail.

The short Life centers on a miraculous story. After robbers killed a merchant near his cave, Palladius was accused of the crime. The account says that the dead man rose through his prayer and identified the killers. This is a received hagiographic narrative, not an independently verified court record. The consulted source does not establish Palladius’s exact birth or death year.
