About Peter of Assche

Peter of Assche was a Franciscan lay brother among the nineteen martyrs of Gorcum. He was born around 1530 in Assche, near Brussels. He belonged to the community at Gorcum, where his responsibilities concerned the material needs of the friary.

A diocesan account describes Peter as the community’s steward and identifies the younger lay brother Cornelius van Wijck as his assistant. These duties distinguish the two brothers from the priests who formed most of the group. The surviving short account supplies no detailed chronology of Peter’s entry into the order or his earlier formation.

The Franciscans were among the clergy and religious seized when the Watergeuzen captured Gorcum in June 1572. They were taken to Den Briel. The order’s historical account describes pressure to reject Catholic teaching on the Eucharist and papal authority, followed by their execution.

Peter died with the other martyrs on July 9, 1572. Their shared remembrance includes diocesan priests and members of several religious orders. The diocesan shrine records their beatification on November 14, 1675, and their canonization on June 29, 1867.

His image entered the visual memory of the group long before the canonization. The Rijksmuseum holds an engraving of Peter by Jacob Matham, dated 1617–1618, from a series depicting the Gorcum martyrs. Measuring just 100 by 60 millimetres at the plate edge, it presents him as an individual within the larger company. The print was made decades after his death; it is a commemorative portrait rather than evidence of an authenticated lifetime likeness.

His feast is July 9, shared with the other Gorcum martyrs.
