Achillas of Alexandria

Portrait of Achillas of Alexandria

About Achillas of Alexandria

The earliest of the two accounts used here is Eusebius’s Ecclesiastical History. Writing in the fourth century, he says that Achillas was appointed presbyter in Alexandria at the same time as Pierius. Eusebius describes Achillas as a notable teacher who was put in charge of the catechetical school. He praises his learning and conduct, but does not give a narrative of his personal life. The evidence therefore supports his clerical role and teaching work more clearly than any details about his family or origins.Socrates Scholasticus, writing in the fifth century, gives a later succession notice. He says that after Peter of Alexandria suffered martyrdom under Diocletian, Achillas was installed as bishop, and that Alexander succeeded him. Socrates then turns to a theological dispute that arose under Alexander. This sequence is the basis for recognizing Achillas as bishop of Alexandria, while the exact dates and length of his episcopate remain uncertain in the source record. The two writers together preserve a short but useful outline: Achillas was first remembered as a learned Alexandrian presbyter and school leader, and later church history included him in the city’s episcopal succession. Neither account supplies a secure birth or death date, a family history, or a detailed account of his pastoral activity. Those gaps are left open rather than filled from later summaries.
