About André Bauer
André Bauer was an Alsatian Franciscan lay brother. His path to religious profession included time in England, a return to France for military service, and renewed formation in the order. He was a brother rather than an ordained priest.
He accompanied Bishop Francesco Fogolla to China in 1899 and reached Taiyuan that May. Bishop Gregorio Grassi assigned him responsibilities for lay staff working in the mission's household and outpatient clinic. His service ended during the violence of 1900. He was killed in Taiyuan on 9 July. He was canonized in 2000 with the Chinese martyrs.
