Biography
Apollinaris of Ravenna

About Apollinaris of Ravenna
Apollinaris is remembered as Ravenna's first bishop and an early preacher of Christianity there. John Paul II's account places his work in the second half of the second century. This provides a different chronology from the apostolic setting familiar in later devotional accounts.
Orthodox tradition presents him as a disciple sent by Peter to Ravenna. In this account, a household becomes a gathering place for Christians, and Apollinaris appoints clergy to serve them. He endures expulsions and returns to continue his ministry. These episodes express the received memory of a missionary bishop; they are not contemporary documentation of an itinerary.
Peter Chrysologus's Sermon 128 remembers Apollinaris through the endurance of a pastor. The sermon describes repeated wounds and a church unwilling to lose its bishop. Its attention falls not simply on the moment of death but on faith maintained through prolonged struggle. Chrysologus calls him a martyr while also discussing his designation as a confessor. The community's need for its shepherd gives the account its shape: his continued presence matters to people still learning to live as a church. At the end, Chrysologus speaks of his body resting among them. This is testimony to Ravenna's remembrance, not a detailed account of Apollinaris's final trial.
The basilica at Classe made that memory visible. Archbishop Maximian consecrated it in 549. Its apse presents Apollinaris in prayer within a Christian vision centered on the cross. The church preserves his bodily relics, according to John Paul II's anniversary message, and honors him as patron of Ravenna and its diocese. The monument belongs to the history of his veneration, not to his own lifetime.
The current Roman calendar offers his optional memorial on July 20.
The 1962 Roman Missal places his celebration on July 23. Keeping those calendars distinct avoids turning a date of worship into an unsupported date of death.
