About Firminus of Amiens

Amiens remembers Firminus as its traditional founder. Tradition places his arrival in the late third century and martyrdom in the early fourth.

Later tradition names Honestus as his teacher and describes preaching before a journey into Gaul. It ends with imprisonment and beheading at Amiens. Pamplona’s municipal history reports doubts about this biography.

The remembered martyr must not be confused with Firmin the Confessor, another saint honored at Amiens. Their separate reliquaries occupied different places in the cathedral’s sanctuary. After the Gothic choir came into use around 1291, the martyr’s gold shrine stood prominently behind the high altar.

The cathedral’s sculptured choir screens later brought the stories of its saints before pilgrims. Relic processions carried that devotion into the city’s streets.

On major festivals the shrines’ precious textile coverings were removed and candles lit, while pilgrims ordinarily venerated them from the aisles and ambulatory rather than entering the cathedral’s choir.
