Gausbert of Montsalvy

About Gausbert of Montsalvy

Gausbert of Montsalvy, also called Gaubert, is remembered as a priest and hermit in Auvergne. His local Catholic feast is kept on 27 May.

A devotional account published by Magnificat describes his movement from parish ministry to solitude in the Cantal mountains. It also remembers him leaving that solitude to preach in Auvergne and the Rouergue.

The foundation at Montsalvy has a more concrete historical setting. Bruno Phalip places the undertaking between 1060 and 1071 and identifies Gausbert, Bertrand, and Pierre as three hermits who cleared land and established a refuge. Nearby stood the abandoned castle of Mandulfe. The arrangements discussed by Phalip required that any restored occupation of the castle should not harm the new monastery.

The municipal history records a grant of territory from Béranger, viscount of Carlat. Gausbert established a church, a monastery, and a hospice for travelers. Four crosses marked the protected area, known as a sauveté, where people could seek ecclesiastical shelter.

The work also helped a settlement grow. Montsalvy’s account connects the building activity with the arrival of workers and small businesses. The community that developed around the monastery became a town whose history still begins with this religious foundation.

The surviving buildings preserve part of that story, although they should not all be treated as Gausbert’s own work. The French heritage register describes the monastery south of the church, with a chapter house, residential buildings, and a refectory around a courtyard. The cloister has disappeared, and the church was altered in later centuries.

His name also continues in the parish of Saint-Gausbert-en-Viadène, listed by the diocese of Rodez at Saint-Amans-des-Cots.

A local report of a celebration at Bes-Bédène in 2022 explicitly names him as the parish’s patron. It describes Mass celebrated in Occitan, with readings and songs and help for worshippers following a French translation.
