About Liphard of Meung

Liphard is remembered at Meung-sur-Loire as a sixth-century hermit who left public responsibilities for a life of prayer. The town’s traditional account describes him as a former judge and governor at Orléans who withdrew with his companion Urbice. It also tells of his later ordination as a priest by the bishop of Orléans.

The best-known story places a dangerous serpent beside the spring used by the two men. Urbice first fled from it, but returned with Liphard’s staff; the creature attacked the wood and died. The account is a foundation legend, linking the saint’s prayer with deliverance from a threatening landscape. The same local tradition credits the community with clearing and draining the marshes.

The historical record is clearer about the institution that carried his name. Jean Mesqui’s study identifies a monastery with a church dedicated to Liphard by the early ninth century. It later became a chapter of secular canons under the bishop of Orléans. This evidence establishes a developed cult, without making every detail of the saint’s received biography certain.

Mesqui also corrects a detail repeated in older accounts: Latin verses supposedly carved on Liphard’s tomb came from a collection of engravings published around 1600. They could not have appeared on a sarcophagus destroyed in 1562. A text associated with an old monument can itself be much later than the person it commemorates.

The church at Hiesse honors the same Liphard of Meung. Its heritage guide explicitly identifies him as the church’s patron and explains the dragon as his traditional artistic attribute. Villetaneuse also has a Saint-Liphard parish and church. The present building was consecrated in December 1991 after damage had made its predecessor unsafe. The dedication survived the replacement of the building.

His local feast is June 3. His name also appears as Lifard or Lyphard.
