About Sindulf of Reims

Sindulf, also called Sindulphe or Sandou, is remembered as a hermit near Reims. Nominis lists his local commemoration at Aussonce on October 20.

His surviving Life was written by Almannus, a monk of Hautvillers, long after the period it describes. Auguste Molinier places its composition shortly before 868.

According to that Life, Sindulf came from Aquitaine and was already a priest when he left his homeland for the region of Reims. He established a cell at Alsonsia, where the author describes a life of fasting, prayer, and psalm singing. The account presents his struggle with temptation in the language of combat against the devil.

Solitude did not mean complete separation from other people in Almannus’s telling. Visitors sought Sindulf, and he taught them from the Prophets, the Apostles, and the Gospel. The author remembers him as a source of consolation and instruction, but gives few particular encounters that can be independently examined.

Historian Eugen Ewig describes the Life as a sermon-like work built largely from common themes rather than concrete information. He sees this as a sign of Almannus’s restraint when details were unavailable.

His remembrance later became attached to Hautvillers. The regional park’s heritage guide records the transfer of his body there in the ninth century under Hincmar. It also explains that the former abbey church became communal after the Revolution and took the name Saint-Sindulphe. Its reliquary preserves the local remembrance of the hermit.

Another church dedication carried his name farther away. The commune of Saint-Sandoux identifies the saint of its church as the Aquitanian hermit associated with Reims and explains that the village took its name from him. The church visible there today was rebuilt after a nineteenth-century fire. The diocesan directory also lists a Saint-Sindulphe church at Villers-le-Tourneur.
