Solus of Solnhofen

Portrait of Solus of Solnhofen

About Solus of Solnhofen

Solus, remembered locally as Sola, was an Anglo-Saxon monk and priest associated with Fulda and the mission of Boniface. He settled beside the Altmühl at the place now called Solnhofen, where local tradition remembers his oratory and pastoral work.

His early biographer, Ermanrich of Ellwangen, presents him as a follower of Boniface who preferred prayer and solitude to worldly honors. The account describes a modest dwelling in a valley bordered by steep hills. Yet the hermit’s retreat was not sealed off from other people: visitors came to hear him, and neighbors supported his work.

According to the same Life, Charlemagne granted him the place where he lived. Solus then transferred property, including gifts he had received, to Fulda. Its chronology needs caution, however, because the edition’s notes identify difficulties in the sequence of events.

The Life also tells of healings associated with him. Ermanrich says that some stories came from an aged servant who had known Solus.

Historian Johannes Fried draws attention to the contrast within this portrait. Ermanrich was a learned writer, yet the saint he praised resembled the early desert hermits. Fried reads this tension as part of Fulda’s reflection on the relationship between solitude and the learned life of a monastery.

The text has also prompted debate about how saints’ lives should be read. In the opening of her study, Lynda Coon notes that its nineteenth-century editor dismissed much of it because of its oral sources and elaborate style. She places that judgment within the historical methods of his own time.

Devotion continued after Solus’s death. The municipal account describes the elevation and reburial of his remains in the ninth century and gives his local feast as 5 December.

The Catholic community there is still listed by the diocese of Eichstätt as Saint Sola.
